The Curse of Nagele (2014)
An abridged retelling of the legend of Nagele
When the Zuiderzee was still a sea, fishermen avoided the waters above Nagele. Fathers warned their sons that a cemetery lay beneath the surface, where old gravestones could tear their nets. Boats could pass over it, but no one should stop to fish: the village was said to be cursed.
According to the legend, Nagele had once been a prosperous fishing village, known for its abundant catch. Its inhabitants, however, were also notorious for drinking and fighting. One stormy day, a quarrel in a tavern on Schokland turned violent. Two fishermen drew their knives, and a priest stepped between them, pleading for peace.
One of the men stabbed the priest. As he lay dying, the priest cursed Nagele, declaring that the sea would engulf it and that future generations would tear their nets on its stones. The waters rose, and the village disappeared.
Stories of objects recovered from the seabed kept the legend alive: a church candlestick, a baptismal font, gravestones, and fragments of ruined buildings. These remains became reminders of the drowned village and the curse said to have followed the priest’s murder.
