Schooling

Pinocchio, 2010

Schooling examines how education, classroom routines, and social rituals shape young citizens. It revisits the relationships between teachers and students, the ceremonies of the Israeli education system, and the visual environment of the school, asking how they influence behavior, memory, and emotion.
The exhibition focuses on the language of Bristol boards: the colors, fonts, images, and decorations used to communicate school rules and ideals. For generations, 180 g boards measuring 100 × 70 cm carried messages intended to be memorized and internalized.
At its center, the Bristol Boards/Utopia project presents alternative educational initiatives from Israel and abroad through a computerized information center. Art offers another model of learning, one that questions conventions and encourages experimentation, invention, and new forms of action.
The museum becomes an interactive learning environment, with classes and discussions led by participating artists and guests. Schooling asks whether a museum can help develop new ideas as well as transmit knowledge about art.
